Meet Dr Sidaginamale: Specialist Hip & Knee Surgeon
Providing specialist, patient-centred care for hip and knee conditions, with expertise in joint replacement, robotic-assisted surgery, complex reconstruction and implant research.
Dr Raghavendra Sidaginamale is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery. Based at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington, he provides care for patients with a range of hip and knee conditions, including those considering joint replacement surgery.
His specialist interests include primary and complex hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacement, robotic-assisted surgery, computer-assisted navigation and knee arthroscopy. He also has expertise in managing fractures around existing hip and knee replacements.
Dr Sidaginamale is committed to shared decision-making, taking time to understand each patient’s concerns and treatment goals before developing an appropriate personalised treatment plan.
Dr Sidaginamale completed his medical degree at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in India before undertaking postgraduate orthopaedic training at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
After moving to the UK, he completed his basic surgical and orthopaedic training at hospitals including East Lancashire Hospitals, the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham and hospitals in London. During this period, he completed the MRCS examination with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He subsequently completed a six-year structured higher surgical training programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics through the North East Deanery, during which he achieved his FRCS (Tr&Orth).
Following his specialist training, Dr Sidaginamale undertook a prestigious 12-month Hip and Knee Replacement fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand. This provided further experience in complex primary hip and knee replacement, as well as fixation of fractures around existing joint replacements.
He also developed expertise in the use of technological advances in joint replacement, including artificial intelligence, computer navigation and robotic-assisted arthroplasty.
Dr Sidaginamale has a strong academic and research background. He completed a PhD in Bioengineering at Newcastle University, focusing on hip replacements.
His research involved collaboration with surgeons, bioengineers, histopathologists, radiologists and the implant industry. His work has included research into metal-on-metal hip replacements and has contributed to understanding and managing patients with these implants.
He has presented his research nationally and internationally and published work in high-impact journals. He continues to contribute to research and supports the analysis of hip and knee implants.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Sidaginamale has a strong interest in education and professional development.
He is involved in teaching and training orthopaedic surgeons and is a faculty member for Royal College of Surgeons examination preparation courses. He is also an Adult Trauma Life Support instructor and mentors orthopaedic trainees at different stages of their careers.
He works as a Consultant at University Hospital of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, where his responsibilities include elective hip and knee clinics, hip and knee surgery and acute trauma care.
He also serves as Clinical Audit Lead for Orthopaedics and is actively involved in local, regional and national audits, including NICE audits and quality improvement initiatives designed to support safe and effective patient care.
