Hip and Knee Replacement Abroad vs the UK: The True Cost

Headline prices for joint replacement in Poland, Lithuania or Turkey can look a fraction of UK private prices. Once you add flights, a longer stay, a companion and aftercare at home, the gap is often much smaller. Headline prices: the UK and abroad

UK figures are the range of average private package prices across UK cities, published by PHIN, the independent body for private healthcare information. Overseas figures are average published prices from the guide Treatment Abroad, and usually cover the operation and hospital stay only.

What the NHS advises before you travel for surgery

  • Plan your aftercare first. The NHS treatment abroad checklist asks you to be clear how your aftercare will be coordinated, and to treat hard selling or no mention of aftercare as warning signs (NHS).
  • The NHS may not pick up routine care. NHS Inform says the NHS is under no obligation to provide care before or after surgery abroad, other than emergency care (NHS Inform).
  • Video calls are not an examination. NHS Inform also notes that a video consultation does not allow a proper physical examination before surgery.
  • Flying soon after surgery raises the risk of blood clots, which is why clinics ask you to stay on before flying home (NHS Inform).
  • Check the travel advice for your destination. The UK Foreign Office publishes health advice for each country, including on medical travel (FCDO, Turkey).

Questions people ask

The headline price usually is. Average published prices in Poland, Lithuania and Turkey are well below UK private prices. Once you add flights, a longer stay, a companion, physiotherapy and follow up at home, independent estimates put the real saving at around £2,000 to £5,000.

The NHS will treat emergencies. NHS guidance says it is under no obligation to provide routine care before or after surgery you arrange abroad, so plan and budget for your follow up care in advance.

Clinics commonly ask you to arrive a few days before surgery and to stay around 10 to 14 nights afterwards before flying, because flying soon after surgery raises the risk of blood clots.

You can often have your free consultation on the same day you get in touch, and surgery within 21 days. Your written quotation confirms your price before you commit.
